Students should only seek an education at an ABFSE accredited institution to ensure that their education will qualify them for licensure. Be vigelant of institutions promising an education that does not lead to licensure. Distance education requires more work on the part of the student than an in-person program. Self motivation, dedication, time management skills and usually includes more work to make up for the in-person component. Students in distance education programs are required to travel to the institution at the end of the education for a period of time designated by the program to complete practical components that were missed during the distance phase of the program. Distance programs in funeral service can not be entirely remote. We encourage students to seek programs that have high levels or practical components as this ensures exposure to skills that are not obtained in the day to day life of a funeral establishment without prior learning in a controlled environment.
